Maine Tpk

Cianbro engaged Cutting Technologies’ (CTI) help in rebuilding and expanding the Maine Turnpike’s Stroudwater River Overpass and Pan Am Railroad Overpass bridges in the City of Portland, Maine. The work included parapet and deck removal, and structural changes to piers and abutments.

Using a curb saw capable of cutting 24”-deep concrete, CTI’s technician horizontally sawed the base of the parapet clear from the roadway. Then, making vertical plunge cuts every 15’, the parapet was sectioned into removable pieces that were easily transferred onto a flatbed with a 300 series excavator.

With the parapet removed, CTI then saw cut the bridge deck into manageable pieces, taking special care not to damage the steel stringer beams beneath the decking. The panelized pieces of deck were then rigged and loaded into tri-axle dump trucks and hauled offsite for processing.

Lastly, using a custom-made wire saw set-up created by CTI’s inhouse team, technicians modified the bridge abutments and piers to receive new structural work.

CTI completed the demolition without disrupting traffic, and well within the allocated schedule and budget. This project has been featured in ENR Magazine.
